The Peekapoo are not a purebred dogs .They are Designer Dogs or Hybrid Dogs. They are a cross breed between a Pekingese to a Toy or Miniature Poodle breed.
Not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC)
Only Recognized by these Clubs with the following names:
American Canine Hybrid Club = Peke-A-Poo
Designer Dogs Kennel Club = Peke-A-Poo
International Designer Canine Registry® = Peekapoo
Designer Breed Registry = Peke a Poo
Despite the popularity of the this mix, there is no breed club for these mixed dogs.
They start to breeding back these two breeds in the 1950s and '60s.
Multi-generational breeding are rare because some of the designer breeders are trying to create a formal breed, because they believe that the best crossing for them is with a purebred Pekingese and a purebred Poodle.
The hybrid cross breed of these designer dogs has remained largely a first-generation cross.
Like all hybrid dogs you have to be aware that their looks, size, and temperament aren't as predictable as those of purebreds, since you don't know which characteristics from each one will they be developed.
Breed: Hybrid dogs breed group
Height: Up to 11 inches tall at the shoulder (28 Cms)
Weight: 4 to 20 pounds (2-9 kg)
Life Span: 10 to 15 years
You can find them in different colors: from solid tans and golden colors through to blacks, chocolates and grays.
Also very common like all the Hybrid dogs you can find them Tri-colors white and black, brown or red.
Coat & Grooming
They are small dogs with furry hair and low shedding.
Their long straight fur tail is carried high over the back and well plumed, very close in appearance to the Pekingese tail.
Peekapoos do require regular grooming to keep the coat free from tangles and mats.
It is very important to find a reliable breeder when you are buying a puppy, the responsible breeder has the obligation to show you health clearances for both your puppy's parents.
Don't let price be your deciding factor when getting a dog. Ask about health testing, temperaments of their dogs, and see if you can meet some of their dogs.
If a breeder does the proper health testing, paying a little more for the dog is in your best interest- pay a little more now.
Why is so important to get the Health Puppy Clearance ?
Because the Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested a particular condition and is completely healthy.
It doesn't extend his affections to strangers; he's naturally suspicious of them, and they must earn his trust in order to be friendly to them.
They are affectionate and very loyal to their families but it is very important to be socialize from a very early stage.
Some may have the tendency to be dominant and a bit demanding, but they are very “ Cute “
Pekepoos get along well with children and other dogs and cats when raised together in the same house.
He is great for new doggie lovers and also as a therapy dog.
A Peekapoo can adapt to apartments, but if you have a fenced yard with small fenced door access will be great for them because they do much better enjoying being outdoors but never leave them unattended.
It is important for the well being of the Peekapoo to live in a home or apartment with air-conditioning, since they can be susceptible to heat exhaustion.
! BUT this is very important to you to know before you get involved with this Peekapoo puppy ! He may be small, but he has a mighty loud bark… He can make and excellent watchdog because if he sees something or someone suspicious or strange for him, he will bark a lot and if you live in house or condominium with noise restrictions this will be a problem to you and better is not to start with this cute breed.
They are really smart dogs, which they can be fairly easy to train but always with the use of positive reinforcement.
Harsh corrections should not be used with a Peekapoo, since they can literally hurt him they are sensitive dogs.
My recommendation for all kind of dogs breeds:
You should be trained with a soft and gentle hand without harsh tones or tactics and lots of positive reinforcement like food treats and most important issue is start training as early as possible if you want to have an happy life with your cute companion.
Use the Crate only for training session or a short time. Never stick your Peekapoo in a crate all day long; only for sleeping time at night if he is used to that they aren't meant to spend their lives locked up in a crate or kennel.
These Hybrid Dogs may be sensitive to cold, warm and damp weather and should be inside most all the time, that means that NEVER walk a doggie like this or left him outside in this kind of environment.
They need very moderate exercise, walking and playing with them will make them very happy.
Ab>Adopting a Dog
If you already have your mind made up that you want to adopt a dog and has to be a Pekapoo, please be sure to:
• Contact your local humane society. Most of the times they will have puppies or very young adults.
• Contact a Pekingese and/or Poodle rescue group.
These groups not only rescue purebred dogs, but also dogs mixed with their breed. It is very likely you will be able to get one there and Save a Life.
